AS 1528 is the Australian standard covering stainless steel tubes and selected tube fittings for food processing and hygienic applications. It defines requirements, including dimensions, tolerances, materials, and internal surface conditions, to support cleanable processing systems, including those designed for clean-in-place (CIP) operation.
What the AS 1528 Series Covers
AS 1528 is a four-part standard published by Standards Australia. Each part covers a different type of tube or fitting:
- AS 1528.1:2019, Part 1: Tubes, covering requirements such as outside diameter, wall thickness, tolerances, materials and surface condition.
- AS 1528.2:2019, Part 2: Screwed tube couplings.
- AS 1528.3:2019, Part 3: Butt weld tube fittings, including commonly used elbows, tees and reducers.
- AS 1528.4:2019, Part 4: Clamp tube fittings, used to form removable hygienic connectionsĀ
These four parts address tubes and specific fitting types. They do not cover every component or design requirement in a complete hygienic processing system. Valves, pumps, instruments, gaskets and other items in the same line may be subject to separate standards or project specifications.
Why AS 1528 Exists
Food and beverage processing systems handle products that must be protected from contamination at every stage. Unlike general engineering pipework, hygienic processing lines typically cannot be dismantled for cleaning after each production run. CIP systems circulate cleaning and sanitising solutions through the closed line. For that process to be reliable, the tube, fittings and connection points throughout the system need to be manufactured and assembled to support effective cleaning.
General engineering stainless tube may not be manufactured to the same dimensional, weld-quality and surface-finish requirements as hygienic-grade tube. AS 1528 addresses this by establishing consistent requirements across tube outside diameter, wall thickness, material grade, internal surface condition and joint geometry.
AS 1528 and Hygienic Design
Hygienic tube systems require smooth product-contact surfaces, accurate dimensional alignment, and joints that minimise areas where residue or microorganisms can accumulate between cleaning cycles. AS 1528 supports cleanable system design by setting requirements for:
- Tube and fitting dimensions and tolerances
- Internal surface condition
- Joint and connection geometry
- Weld-related requirements under the applicable part
That said, meeting AS 1528 requirements is one part of achieving a cleanable system. Effective CIP also depends on the overall system design and operating process. Weld quality and alignment, drainability, branch and dead-leg configuration, flow conditions, cleaning temperature, chemical concentration, contact time, valve and equipment design, and cleaning validation all affect the result. AS 1528 specifies component requirements; it does not guarantee CIP performance on its own.
On surface finish, the 2019 series specifies a maximum internal surface roughness of 0.8 µm Ra for tubes and fittings. The standard also includes requirements for the internal weld-bead condition and allowable heat tint, where applicable to the relevant part. Confirm the requirements for your specific component against the relevant section of the standard, and ask your supplier for surface finish documentation before ordering.
AS 1528 Compared with ASME BPE
Australian and New Zealand hygienic processing systems are commonly specified to AS 1528. Some imported equipment, particularly from the United States, may be manufactured to ASME BPE, a standard developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and primarily associated with bioprocessing and pharmaceutical applications. ASME BPE may also appear on imported hygienic equipment used in food and beverage industries.
AS 1528 specifies dimensions in millimetres using a tube-size series common to Australian and New Zealand hygienic processing. Many common outside diameters are inch-derived metric values, including 25.4 mm, 38.1 mm and 50.8 mm. ASME BPE uses different tube dimensions, component specifications and fitting geometries that reflect US bioprocessing conventions.
Where equipment built to one standard needs to connect to pipework built to the other, components should not be assumed to be directly interchangeable. A properly selected transition fitting or hygienic adaptor may be required. Any such transition needs to be checked for dimensional compatibility, seal geometry, material grade, surface condition and cleanability before it is included in a hygienic line.
Who May Need to Specify AS 1528
AS 1528 applies to any facility that uses stainless steel hygienic tubes and fittings in food or beverage processing. This includes dairy processors, breweries, soft drink and juice manufacturers, plant-based beverage producers and food-ingredient manufacturers.
The standard may be required by a project specification, a customer or principal's engineering standard, compatibility with an existing processing line, a procurement contract, an audit or certification requirement, an export-market requirement, or a fabricator or equipment package specification. The specific obligations for each facility depend on applicable legislation, certification, and contractual requirements, so check what applies to your project rather than assuming a single answer covers every context.
What Buyers Should Check Before Ordering
When sourcing AS 1528-compliant tubes or fittings, confirm these points before placing an order:
- Which part of AS 1528 applies to the component you need
- Required tube outside diameter and wall thickness
- Stainless steel grade (316L is commonly specified for food-contact applications, but verify for your application)
- Connection type: screwed, butt weld or clamp
- Internal surface finish specification and supporting documentation
- Compatibility with existing equipment in the same line
- Material certificationĀ
- Any project-specific audit or export requirements
Terms such as "sanitary", "hygienic" or "food grade" do not by themselves confirm dimensional compliance with AS 1528. Ask for documentation that references the standard and the relevant part.

FAQs
What is AS 1528?
AS 1528 is the Australian standard for stainless steel tubes and selected tube fittings used in food processing and hygienic applications. Published by Standards Australia, it covers dimensions, tolerances, material requirements and internal surface condition across four parts: tubes, screwed couplings, butt weld fittings and clamp fittings.
What is the difference between AS 1528 and ASME BPE?
AS 1528 and ASME BPE are separate standards developed for different industries, regions and dimensional systems. AS 1528 is an Australian standard using metric dimensions aligned with the tube sizes common in AU/NZ hygienic processing, including inch-derived metric values such as 25.4 mm and 38.1 mm. ASME BPE is a US-developed standard primarily associated with bioprocessing and pharmaceutical equipment. The two standards use different tube dimensions, component specifications and fitting geometries and are not directly interchangeable. Where equipment from the two systems needs to connect, a properly selected and verified transition fitting is required.
Is AS 1528 mandatory in Australia?
AS 1528 is not universally mandated by law for every Australian food or beverage processing facility. It may be required through a project specification, customer engineering standard, procurement contract, audit or certification requirement, export market requirement, or compatibility with existing plant. Australian food-safety requirements generally require equipment and food-contact surfaces to be capable of effective cleaning and maintenance in a sanitary condition. The specific obligations for each facility depend on applicable legislation, certification and contractual requirements.
What surface finish does AS 1528 require?
The 2019 AS 1528 series specifies a maximum internal surface roughness of 0.8 µm Ra for tubes and fittings. The standard also covers internal weld-bead condition and allowable heat tint, where applicable to the relevant part. Confirm the requirements for your specific component, and ask your supplier for surface finish documentation before ordering.
