Polymer Types and Their Applications

EPDM - (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) Very readily used in the food industry for CIP to steam applications. EPDMF has good resistance to alkalis, cleaning chemicals. Also used in hot food processes with foods not containing fats or oils. Also used for steam applications for high its temperature resistance.

Ethylene Propylene has excellent ozone, steam and chemical resistance characteristics. Generally used in automotive brake systems.

Nitrile - (Buna-N or NBR) Presently the seal industry's most widely used elastomer. Nitrile combines excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils and fuels, silicone greases, hydraulic fluids, water and alcohols. It has a good balance of working properties such as low compression set, high tensile strength, high abrasion resistance, combined with a low cost. Typically used in HVAC condenser heat exchangers.

Widely used in the Food Industry for general sealing applications especially for food oil-based products.

FKM - (Fluorocarbon, Viton) Featuring excellent resistance to petroleum products and solvents, with good high temperature and low compression set characteristics. For use with wide chemical exposure situations, and with low gas permeability, it is also suited for hard vacuum service. Although it has high temperature range this polymer is not suitable for steam or hot water applications.

Other polymers are available on request.
